- Subject: Help:Bootleggers in area
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I'd like to post this to see what you all out there in radio/net-land think
- and see if anyone has any ideas about what to do.
-
- In my home town, where my Dad and Mom, both hams live there is a group of
- bootleggers using 148.00Mhz. It started with one No-coder who must have
- thought it was fun to talk on fm. He told his cb'er friends about it. They
- started to buy rigs too. Now there is around 10 to 15 people, guys, wives,
- little kids, all hanging out on 148.00. They yak away, never identifying,
- because only one of them has a license. They cuss and swear and joke about
- getting away with talking without a license. Every now and then one of them
- makes a mistake and transmits on the local repeater for one transmission, then
- quickly moves back to 148.00 to talk to his/her buddies.
-
- The local hams have contacted the FCC field office for the area many many
- times. At first the engineer in charge said he couldn't do anything about it
- at all, he was too busy and understaffed and underbudgeted. After many more
- calls and complaints, he actually drove out to the community and listened in.
- Yep, they were there, doing just what the locals said, alright. Too bad. In
- fact, the engineer told the locals that they better be careful, these people
- might retaliate on the local hams for turning them in. The League has been
- asked for help, the Official Observer people have been informed, but so far,
- nothing has been done. The local hams have tape recordings by the dozen, they
- know exacly who these people are, where they live, where they work, the few
- who actually do work, etc. Still, the FCC nor the League will or can do
- anything about it.
-
- Now, I ask you, if these people can do this with impunity, why the heck should
- the rest of us EVER worry about iding on time, or saying a cuss word now and
- then, or even bother getting a license at all.
-
- Oh yeah, I forgot, one of them is using a call that is assigned to a guy who
- lives in St. Louis, which is a long way from here and he ain't the guy from
- St. Louis.
-
- This whole thing makes me sick, and my folks and the rest of the ham community
- in the area are really ticked. Wouldn't you be, too?
-
- Now, what should they/we do about this situation. Does anyone have any kind
- of connection with the FCC? Is there anyone out there who gives a damn?
-
- Help!

- lot of them. You can find Gamebytes at ftp.uml.edu, under Games, in the
- Game_Bytes subdirectory. I am studying for finals, and will look at my e-

- tell you whether or not you were the first person to ask for a game. Then
- you can send me the check, (if you were lucky enough to be first) and I will
- send you the game. It's as simple as that.

-
- The Police Aamteur Radio Team (PART) of Westford, MA is once again providing
- the communications for the Tour de Lowell Citizen's bike races on Sunday,
- June 12, 1994. We have counted on many of the ham radio operators volunteers
- for previous years and again are asking for your help. The Lowell Sun,
- sponsor of the race, took a year off last year... but are starting up the
- annual event again this year!
-
- The race runs fron 8:30 AM until about 11 AM and is 30 miles long travelling
- through towns in Massachusetts (Lowell and Dracut) and New Hampshire (Windham
- and Pelham). We will be getting together at about 7:30 AM. We'll be meeting
- in downtown Lowell for assignment of station location throughout the route to
- provide "some" traffic control as well as safety operations. We need at least
- 25 hams or more to safely run this net. So anyone is welcome to join us.
-
- If you would like to help us out this year... you are invited to inquire or
- send me your information about how I may contact you to any of the below
- listed addresses. All you need is a 2 meter ht (although there will be some

- In my community one of the local repeaters has been plagued by an
- individual or individuals who is causing willful interference with
- others by constantly kerchuncking the repeater and also using DTMF
- tones when others are on the air. This appears to be a willful
- attempt to disrupt communications. I am looking for any insights
- that people may have regarding the psychopathology of people who
- engage in this behavior. Any insights or experience that people on
- the net have had with these individuals would be most welcome. When
- people have been caught were they well known and what was the
- motivation. Your input may help us stop this illegal operation.

- Well John , You may count me as one of the amateur's that don't
- feel that way.

- It is a concern to me that so many of us just don't seem to care
